Fin Tech and mobile computing concept. Hand holding tablet

The Fintech sector is booming. Every day we read about new companies, record unicorn valuations, new fundraising rounds, etc.Nevertheless, it is still really hard to understand who are the biggest players in the industry. Valuation is not a 100% reliable metric to assess a company’s real value and revenues are usually not disclosed. Therefore, we have decided to create a Fintech ranking system based on turnover (in other words, the amount exchanged on each platform). We are aware that this is not a perfect metric either. Actually, it is “easier” to exchange 1 Million USD in FX than in lending. Yet, the turnover is usually an open metric that companies share publicly and one that is an easily comparable variable. We have decided to exclude some companies we do not consider as truly* Fintech from this ranking system:

  • Financial software companies. In other words, companies that develop software for banks and financial institutions.
  • Companies that provide back-end solutions. In other words, companies that do not serve end customers (retail or businesses).
  • Companies that do not manage / hold clients' funds.
  • Payment gateways.

We have also excluded companies with less than 100 Million USD turnover as we consider them “small” companies. We have also decided to exclude companies from “exotic” regions in Asia or Africa considering their metrics are not easy to find and check. So we have focused on Europe and North America.CompayTurnover1. - Lending club9.200.000.0002. - Prosper4.000.000.0002. - Receivables Exchange4.000.000.0004. - TransferWise3.500.000.0005. - Social Finance - SoFi3.000.000.0006. - Wealthfront2.500.000.0007. - Currencyfair2.000.000.0007. - Ondeck2.000.000.0007. - Kantox2.000.000.00010. - Kickstarter1.900.000.00011. - Zopa1.450.000.00012. - Funding circle1.120.000.00013. - RateSetter1.090.000.00014. - Avant1.000.000.00014. - Asset Avenue1.000.000.00014. - Biz2Credit1.000.000.00017. - SavingGlobal 550.000.00017. - Kabbage 550.000.00019. - LendInvest 540.000.00020. - MarketInvoice 450.000.00021. - Prêt d'Union 230.000.00022. - Borro 220.000.00023. - Common Bond 200.000.00024. - Fundable 190.000.00025. - Crowdcube 140.000.000PS: if you consider that your company should be included in this ranking, or if your turnover data is incorrect or outdated, please write to us at contact@kantox.com indicating the name of your company and your turnover (including evidence of it) and we will update the ranking.Sources: All data regarding turnover figures has been drawn from different online sources including TechCrunch, WSJ, Forbes, CityAM and corporate websites.* For us, “true” Fintech means alternative finance. Companies that are leveraging technology to propose financial services that are competing with banks: lending, payments, wealth management, etc. This article was originally published on Philippe Gelis' Linkedin Pulse
